Light opacity places a faint mark behind the text that stays readable — good for long documents. Medium is a sensible default. Strong makes the watermark dominant, which suits short notices where the status matters more than easy reading. Whatever you choose, the original text underneath is untouched.
Be clear-eyed about what a watermark does: it's a visual mark, not security. A determined person could re-render or crop it. If you need to actually restrict who can open or change a file, add a password with protect a PDF — and you can do both. This tool currently adds diagonal text across all pages; it runs entirely in your browser and, of course, meldpdf never adds a watermark of its own.
