When to delete pages (and when to split instead)

Deleting is the right choice when you want to keep most of a document but drop a few specific pages — a blank sheet left by a scanner, a fax cover page, a duplicate, or an appendix you don't want to share. If instead you want to keep only a small selection and discard the rest, the split / extract tool is faster: you list the pages to keep rather than the ones to remove. Both produce a fresh PDF and leave your original untouched.

Common reasons people remove PDF pages

• Bank statements & invoices — trim a statement down to the months a landlord, bank or visa office actually asked for.
• Scanned documents — drop the blank back of a double-sided scan, or a stray separator sheet.
• Contracts & reports — remove an internal appendix or a signature page before circulating a draft.

Getting the page numbers right

Pages are counted from 1, in the order they appear in the file. Enter single pages and ranges together, separated by commas — for example 1, 4, 9-12 removes page 1, page 4, and pages 9 through 12. Numbering always refers to the original document, so you don't have to recalculate as pages are removed. If you're not sure which pages to cut, open the PDF in any viewer first and note the numbers.

What deleting does — and doesn't do

Removing a page deletes that page and everything drawn on it, and the new file is usually a little smaller. It is not the same as compressing (the remaining pages keep their full quality — see compress a PDF) and it is not redaction: text or data on the pages you keep is unchanged. Any bookmarks or links that pointed at a removed page will no longer resolve.

Can I undo a deletion after downloading?

The downloaded file is a new PDF with the pages already removed — there is no undo inside it. However, your original file is never modified. Simply re-open the original and run the tool again with different page numbers if you removed the wrong ones.

Does deleting pages reduce the file size?

Usually yes. Each removed page and its embedded images, fonts and annotations are dropped, so the resulting file is smaller. The reduction depends on the content — removing a text-only page saves less than removing a page with large photographs.
